UAE: Women empowerment top national priority

Empowering women is a key component of the UAE government's strategy, according to Dr Mohammed Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

He was speaking on the 'Family: A Source of Social Identity – Visions and Ambitions' at a conference organised by the Dubai Women's Association yesterday.

Dr Gargash said women's contribution to the political sphere is remarkable as 22.5 per cent of the Federal National Council members are women, exceeding the global average of 17 per cent.

He added that women in the UAE account for 27.95 per cent of the national labour force, marking an annual growth of 3.5 per cent from 1985 to 2005.

At the educational level, about 75 per cent of all students in the UAE University are women, and three out of every five students in the public higher education system are women.

In this context, he praised the enthusiastic approach demonstrated by Emirati women towards this national agenda.

He also highlighted the government's commitment to women's empowerment as demonstrated by the recent cabinet reshuffle which brought more women to hold ministerial offices.
