Jordan: Honour killing sentence could signal tougher stance

A court in Jordan has sentenced a 23-year-old man to 10 years in jail for killing his sister.

He was originally sentenced to death, but this was commuted to give him the chance to repent.
Human rights groups have urged Jordan's King Abdullah to do more to prevent what are known as honour killings.

His Government has abolished the legal provision that had seen those convicted of such killings in the past receive sentences as light as six months.

The harsher punishment delivered by the court in this case may be a sign of greater official determination to curb honour killings in the conservative, tribal-dominated society.
